Cushman-Roe

Shoreline, WA, USA

The Cushman-Roe project is a multi-phase restoration of a 1960s residence originally designed by architect Edward Cushman. Located in the Seattle area, the project focused on balancing historical preservation with modern building codes. I was proud to contribute to the team in honoring Cushman’s design through high-precision carpentry and specialized tile work, executing the intricate details that define this project’s historic revival.

The primary bathroom was the most technically demanding phase of this project. To ensure a finish that matched the home’s architectural significance, I managed the entire installation process—from framing and substrate preparation to the final setting. I ensured every surface was perfectly plumb and waterproofed to support Dtile, a unique modular system from Holland.

Unlike traditional flat tile, Dtile is a "wrap-around" system that uses curved edges and three-dimensional corner pieces to cover surfaces in a continuous, seamless skin. Working closely with the team on the layout, I engineered the framing and substrates with zero margin for error. This precision allowed me to integrate every transition into a flawless three-dimensional grid, turning the bathroom into a functional sculpture while ensuring the long-term integrity of the moisture barrier.
